AI, entrepreneurship and local impact
What our Walsall Launchpad workshop taught us about using AI to accelerate clarity, strengthen human judgement and create connections that extend beyond the people in the room.
There is a lot of discussion about whether artificial intelligence will replace people. After delivering our recent Launchpad workshop in Walsall, I came away thinking the opposite.
Walsall Launchpad workshop
The Walsall session brought founders together around a shared process, using AI to speed up planning and reflection while leaving more time for discussion, challenge, introductions and practical support.
The outcomes came from that combination: structured technology, experienced guidance and the value of a local network forming around the people in the room.
Speed creates space
Throughout the day, Launchpad rapidly guided founders through business planning, market analysis, customer profiling, financial forecasting and marketing strategy. In a matter of hours, people achieved a level of clarity that would often take weeks of independent research and reflection.
That speed matters.
It means founders spend less time trying to structure their thoughts and more time thinking critically about their business. It gives advisers more time to mentor rather than simply gather information. Most importantly, it creates space for the conversations that often make the biggest difference.
Better conversations
One founder producing handmade luxury skincare products discovered through Launchpad's financial modelling that her pricing would actually leave her making a loss.
The software identified the issue almost instantly.
What happened next could not have happened without both the technology and the people in the room. Other founders shared what they would genuinely expect to pay for premium handmade products, helping her realise she had been comparing herself with mass-produced alternatives rather than businesses like her own.
Together we explored different pricing scenarios until she found a price point that made the business commercially sustainable while paying herself the salary she wanted.
Building relationships
One of my favourite moments involved two women working in the hair and beauty industry. As they shared their businesses and ambitions, the conversation developed into a potential commercial opportunity, with a new hairdresser exploring renting a chair within an established salon.
Launchpad did not manufacture that opportunity, but it did create the environment where the relationship could happen.
A founder exploring new ways for customers to pay was introduced to an asset finance specialist after Launchpad identified customer finance as a potential way of removing barriers to purchase.
Another participant recognised through their marketing plan that social media was a significant development need and was connected into another fully funded specialist programme within their local ecosystem.
These were not simply recommendations. They were introductions beyond their existing networks.
Looking beyond the founder
Perhaps the most rewarding conversation of the day involved a founder who was recieving financial support while developing a business idea.
Using Launchpad's financial forecasting, we explored what success could realistically look like over the next two years. Rather than relying on assumptions, he was able to model different scenarios and understand what the numbers actually meant.
The forecast showed that, if the business performed as planned and in continuation of his early financial success, it could generate an income above the UK average salary for the founder by the end of the first year, while still leaving enough profit to reinvest into the business.
Within around 18 months, it could also realistically afford to employ an additional family member to support its operations.
The human in the loop
One of the biggest opportunities AI gives us is not simply better business plans. It is better conversations.
When founders arrive with more clarity, mentors spend less time gathering information and more time asking better questions and removing specific barriers to growth.
Instead of manually calculating margins, we can discuss pricing strategy. Instead of spending hours explaining how to structure a business plan, we can explore whether the business model is genuinely viable.
Instead of producing paperwork, we can spend time introducing people, building confidence and strengthening local business communities.
The evidence from Walsall
Twelve participants responded, and the results showed strong satisfaction alongside measurable improvements in business clarity, customer understanding, marketing and financial confidence.

awarded the workshop the highest possible overall rating.
rated the workshop content 5 out of 5 for relevance.
participants rated the overall workshop below 4 out of 5.
Of the eight participants who had attended other business support programmes, seven rated Launchpad as more helpful. One felt it was comparable, and none felt it was less helpful.
33% of all respondents were accessing structured business support for the first time.
Human outcomes
Participants described the workshop as practical, supportive and easy to follow. They valued how AI helped organise their thinking, while also highlighting the opportunity to network, learn from different experiences and receive tailored guidance.
One of the strongest themes was not a request to change the workshop. It was a request for more workshops like it.
The future of business support
At The NextGen, we describe Launchpad as a decision-support system. Its purpose is not to automate entrepreneurship, but to accelerate planning, analysis and reflection so founders and advisers can focus on judgement, trust, encouragement, local knowledge and meaningful connections.
Together, these strengths help founders make better decisions, build stronger businesses and create lasting economic impact that reaches far beyond the people sitting in the room.
